Immunizations Q & A

Why do I need immunizations?

Immunizations include a series of vaccinations you start receiving in infancy. The purpose is to build up your immune system so it can fight off serious communicable diseases. You may need immunizations if:

  • You’re planning to travel overseas
  • You’re pregnant or trying to become pregnant
  • You’re expecting a new addition to the family
  • You don’t know if you’re current on immunizations
  • You’re older or have a weakened immune system
  • You suffered from a puncture wound, especially if the object was dirty or contaminated

Because Immunity derived from childhood vaccines starts wearing off as you get older, in some cases you may be due now if you haven’t had immunizations in a while,

Which immunizations do I need?

You require a personalized immunization schedule based on your age and health history. At Downtown Medical Group you can receive all of the essential immunizations you may need, including:

Are there any side effects of immunizations?

Sometimes, but the side effects are minor and very temporary. Certain immunizations can leave you a little sore at the injection site. For instance, the shingles vaccine, which is usually administered into the muscle in your upper arm, can leave your arm a bit sore for a few hours afterward.

It’s also possible to experience some minor flu-like symptoms and fatigue with certain vaccines and vaccinations. But when you come in to see the team at Downtown Medical Group for your evaluation, the team can let you know if there are any side effects that may affect you. Most immunizations cause little to no issues.
